Attention all fans of fresh produce! On June 1st, Caltech Dining Services (CDS) hosted their first ever Pop-Up Farmers Market in the Little Browne Dining Room! Featured among the usual fruits and vegetables were Persian cucumbers, roasted yams, nectarines, and cherries. Many students lined up from 3-5 pm that day for their own tray of 2 fruits and 2 vegetables. Most opted for a cup of highly sought-after berries (both strawberries and blueberries were available), in addition to a cucumber or som

Dear Undergraduates, As we barrel towards the end of another academic year and prepare to say “au revoir” to our soon-to-be-graduates, I hope we can all take a moment to appreciate the time that we have been able to spend together and reflect upon what we have overcome in the past few years, both as individuals and as a community. The last three years were unprecedented in US higher education, and in the history of the world. We were forced to alter the ways we work, study, teach, interact, pla

“I can say that when I was first asked about it, it obviously seemed like a challenging role, but I genuinely believe that I can stand up to the challenge,” chimed Dr. Jennifer Jahner, newly appointed Dean of Undergraduate Students. Despite being in the early days of her tenure, Jahner already shows a promising vision for Caltech’s undergraduate program, and an understanding of the need for continual growth and adaptation in this new environment. In an interview with the Tech, Jahner described

In my almost two years as an undergraduate at this school, I have had two bikes stolen from me on campus. After a lockless overnight stay outside of the Red Door third term frosh year, my beloved green Schwinn, that transported me to and from school for over 4 years, had disappeared from my life. Ok, lesson learned. I was immediately on the market for a new bike. Two weeks later I had acquired a retro blue Schwinn hybrid. During my 2022 Copenhagen summer, my affinity for cycling only grew. Fruit! Whether it is a refreshing dessert or a healthy snack, we all appreciate having it as an option to supplement our diet of Red Door sandwiches and other CDS fare. Even students who regularly cook their own food or eat out will often partake in open kitchen fruits for their daily dose of vitamin C or potassium. But are Caltech students satisfied with the array of fruit that CDS provides? In case you did not know, CDS offers apples, oranges, and bananas at most dining locations (i.e. open k

“I planned accordingly… based on the rules of the lottery”, says Hannah Fisher (ME ‘24, Unaffiliated) “If they had stuck with the original rules, I would have gotten housing in Bechtel. But now I don’t have on-campus housing.” Fisher is one of as many as 20 students who are living off-campus involuntarily, due to the over-admission of the class of 2027. On Tuesday, May 2nd, Joe Bennethum sent out an email to undergraduates telling them that the housing office was “notified by Admissions about

Standing tall on Caltech campus, an Engelmann Oak towered over Hameetman Center right outside of the Red Door café exit. Then it fell on March 2. The fallen tree blocked the walkway from the North Houses and Browne Dining Hall to Spalding and Keck. Security soon surrounded the tree and blocked off the area with caution tape. Upon questioning about the fate of the tree, security responded that the arborist would come to cut down the tree, and the walkway was free the next day. To this day, no rep

It’s spring, and with the changing of the season comes the fantastic sight of turtles zooming around campus. It can be very amusing to see turtles out as far as the Atheneum or swimming in the Caltech Hall Pond. But why do they do this, and should they be stopped? Is the turtle menace going to take over campus? There are over 99 turtles that call the turtle pond their home. The population is mainly composed of red-eared sliders although there are 1 or 2 softshell turtles as well. There are also

Background According to a recent estimate, more than 250 students at Caltech receive some form of disability accommodation – academic, housing, dietary, or otherwise. As many of the residents of the South Hovses are aware, the hot water system is very inconsistent. Many times people have gone to shower only to be disappointed by lukewarm or cold water temperatures. Recently the problem has been especially concentrated in Dabney Hovse and Fleming Hovse, as well as one shower in Ricketts Hovse. At times it has gotten so bad that people are to

For almost as long as Caltech had undergraduate students, the institute has guaranteed its students housing on campus for four years. This policy stood until 2021, when the Institute had a record yield rate of 54% of admitted students. This, combined with the numerous students who took a gap year during the 2020-21 school year, meant that there were too many students for the nine resi
