Bomb Threat on Campus Near South Undergraduate Houses

At 10:08, an email from the Caltech Notification System said:

Pasadena Police have concluded their search of the Caltech campus and California Blvd. There is no active or continuing threat to campus. Full and unrestricted access to campus has resumed. Students who were evacuated from their residences may return.

At 10:04, Caltech Security gave the all clear for students to return to the South Houses.

At 10:03, an email from the Housing Office to undergraduates said:

This morning, December 9, 2024, Caltech received a phone call alleging a bomb threat to campus. During a sweep, a suspicious package was located near undergraduate housing on the south side of campus. Pasadena Police responded and determined that the package was not a bomb or other explosive device.

At 09:13, an email from the Caltech Notification System said:

Police determined that the package was not a bomb or explosive device.
Blacker, Dabney, Fleming, and Ricketts houses remain closed to all occupants for the time being.
Police continue to assess the area. California Boulevard is closed to road traffic between Arden and Hill.

09:00 – region south of Olive Walk, as well as Red Door Cafe and Browne Dining Hall, remain closed. Broad Cafe is open and serving food. Students are free to move about campus otherwise.

At 08:42, an email from the Caltech Notification System said:

Please continue to remain clear of the area around the south undergraduate houses. Individuals who are not already on campus, should stay away. California Boulevard is closed to road traffic between Arden and Hill.

At 08:04, an email from Caltech Notification System said:

Caltech Security is still responding to an alleged bomb threat on the south side of campus, near the south undergraduate houses. Pasadena Police are on-site and have identified a suspicious package in the area. Out of an abundance of caution, undergraduate residents in Blacker, Dabney, Fleming, and Ricketts houses have been evacuated. They have been relocated to Bechtel Residence and Avery House. Please remain clear of the area around the south undergraduate houses. Individuals who are not already on campus, should stay away. California Boulevard is closed to road traffic between Arden and Hill. This is an active and developing situation. Updates will follow.

At 07:53, the Olive Walk was blocked off with security tape. Red Door Cafe and Browne Dining Hall stopped service and were also evacuated. The North Houses were not being evacuated.

At 07:19, security pulled the fire alarm in the South Houses and began evacuating the residents. RLCs told people in person to go to either Avery Dining Hall or Bechtel (varying by person).

At 06:53, security began searching the trash cans inside Fleming and Dabney House, and blocked off the exits to the Orange Walk.

At 06:30, a student in Dabney House saw security with flashlights taking lots of pictures and moving around things in Dabney Backyard, primarily on the ground by the greenhouse.

At approximately 05:00, Pasadena Police approached a group of students working on a radar project for an electrical engineering class outside on South Holliston Ave. The students explained and demonstrated their project, and the police moved on.
