The 8th Party
Avery joins the Caltech Interhouse tradition

A second poll decided on Phantom of the Opera-style masquerade as the theme of Avery Interhouse, where construction would consist of an opera stage. Avery’s dining hall and library were decorated and used during the party as well, the latter for Dance Dance Revolution and mask-decorating. Even without alcohol available, few complaints were heard by Tech reporters. Lloyd House freshman Ioana Aanei says, “The artwork was beautiful.” One complaint voiced by Aanei was that playing hip-hop music detracted from the Phantom of the Opera theme. The music played was “eclectic”, ranging from remixed Beatles to Phantom of the Opera tracks to more typical hip-hop. Construction of an Avery Interhouse leads some to suspect that Avery is becoming more “House-like.” Recently, the procedure for acquiring Avery membership was debated. The open membership procedure of obtaining 10 signatures from current members of Avery remained intact, but more than 60% of Avery members voted to institute social membership. Still, Avery freshman Justine Chia does not think Avery is becoming a traditional House. “We wanted to build an Interhouse because it could serve as a house-bonding activity. So yes, Avery is a house, but not in the traditional sense of house,” she said. “Avery is more of a community.” |
